Grammy-winning singer and Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson can add mom-to-be to her resume after a weekend baby shower in her honor was held in downtown Chicago, the Chicago Tribune reports. Felicia Fields, a longtime friend of the Hudson, confirmed to the paper that the event happened on Saturday. "It was a baby shower, a quiet gathering of friends and mostly family," Fields, also a singer and actress, said of a gathering in a relative's home. "They're really trying to keep it kind of quiet." She added: "It was a nice time that we had." When asked if Hudson received blue or pink gifts, Fields said, "They don't know [the gender]. More yellow." Another paper, the Chicago Sun-Times, reports Hudson is seven months along. Hudson, 27, who is engaged to Harvard-educated-lawyer-turned-wrestler David Otunga, has also kept mum about her upcoming wedding date.By: People Magazine

Leave it to Ellen DeGeneres to mention graduation, tequila, fleas, gays, beads, Hurricane Katrina and Lady Gaga in the same speech. The talk show host gave the keynote address at the Tulane University commencement ceremony last weekend. The result was one of the funniest addresses at a common cement
Ellen addressed the 2,000 members of Tulane’s “Katrina Class,” students who were freshmen when the hurricane devastated New Orleans and closed the school. She also made a brief surprise appearance at the Tulane commencement ceremonies in 2006, the first graduation after the horrific storm hit. This time around she joined honorary degree recipient Harry Connick Jr. as the honored celebrity guests at the event. Ellen’s talk was equal parts funny, serious, touching and memorable.
After her address, which she concluded with lyrics from Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance,” Ellen proceeded to do just that. Like on her syndicated show, Ellen danced through the audience bringing the graduates and their families to their feet. You're probably familiar with Linda Perry, even if you think you're not. In addition to being a popular singer in the late '90s, Perry has written and produced some me ga-hits for current recording artists, including Pink's "Get This Party Started," Gwen Stefani's "What Are You Waiting For?," Alicia Keys' "Superwoman" and a half-dozen chart-toppers for Christina Aguilera, including her gay-inclusive hit song "Beautiful.""It's funny," Ford told Soap Opera Digest, "[Linda's] enormously more well-known than I am."
Almost as much has been made of Ford's leap to daytime television as it has of her coming out. In April she joined that cast of CBS daytime drama The Young and the Restless as the fourth incarnation of Mackenzie Browning, ex-wife and maybe-cousin of Billy Abbott.Ford told Soap Opera Digest that she shut down her agent when he first mentioned meeting with Y&R producers, but when he finally convinced her to sit down with them, she was sold. She said her friends gave her conflicting advice about joining the show, but her mom supports anything she wants to do in terms of work, and all the haters "can suck it."Ford told The Advocate that joining such an established cast was "nerve-wracking," much like walking onto The L Word set, but that she knew things would be easier once she "hit her stride."The article touches on what it was like growing up with a mom like Cybill Shepherd ("Her sense of humor is way out there, while mine can be dark and dry. Mostly, though, it appears that Ford isn't looking backwards — not to her highly-publicized and much-debated coming out or at her former accomplishments as the daughter of Cybill Shepherd. She's in a relationship with Linda Perry and enjoying every day of boot camp — just another actress, out in Hollywood.
In its 72 years of making animated movie musicals, Disney has featured Sleeping Beauties, Snow Whites, Little Mermaids, lions, tramps and bears. But it has never made a movie about a black princess, or any black lead character for that matter. Into that void comes The Princess and the Frog, due out in December. Finally the mouse is reaching out to a segment of the population it has shamefully ignored for decades.
Sure, the trailer shows many other prominent black characters. Oprah Winfrey and Terrence Howard voice Tiana’s parents. And Jennifer Lewis and Keith David are the film’s good and bad voodoo practitioners, respectively. But, still, when we look at the heroine for at least a portion of the film what we’ll see a frog. This is not the kind of embracing of diversity I was hoping for with this movie, Disney.
Of course, the film hasn’t been without its controversies already. At first filmmakers wanted to make Tiana a maid called Maddy, but it was a little too close to Mammy and back into the big book of names they delved. Also we could talk for days about the inaccuracies and stereotypes it will no doubt make in its depiction of voodoo.
Look, I grew up on Disney movies. And, as an Asian-American, I’d become wearily accustomed to them not reflecting what I saw in the mirror. (Mulan didn’t come along until well after my Disney deifying years were over.) Still the Disney magic totally worked on me as a child. So I want nothing more than to root for this movie. I want generations of little girls of all races and ethnicities to love and look up to Princess Tiana.
But I’m also not a child anymore and I no longer believe in fairy tales. I believe in fairness. And I’m not sure it’s fair to wait 72 years to give the world its first black Disney princess and then make her look like a frog.
